Who pays for GermanRetro?
- It is a free website and hosting is donated by Round Rock Technology Incubator, owned by Paul and Michael Palmer. Please read a message from Paul and Mike.
Is GermanRetro non-profit?
No, we do not want the hassle of being a non-profit. It is held under a LLC called Round Rock Technology Incubator, a entity we use for community service projects.
What other wiki sites and open source projects structured like GermanRetro?
- WikiHow.com - a cool wiki site for how-to tips
- Wikia - a public hosting service for wikis' founded by the founder of Wikipedia
- WikiTravel.org - a very kewl wiki, build the world's largest travel guide
- Firefox an open source browser
- RedHat Linux a popular distributor of Linux
- MySQL a great open source database
- Craigslist.org - wonderful place to buy and sell stuff
Is GermanRetro profitable?
No. We do not think we will get rich from GermanRetro. We (Paul and Mike) do not draw salaries from GermanRetro. We do have some minor costs of servers, and bandwidth that we are happy to donate.
How can the VW community be assured this information will remain "free"
The great thing about open, is the freedom it brings. Since the site is licensed under the Creative Commons license, it can be "forked" by the community for free, and a new site can be created. Paul and Mike are capitalists, but we do not want to ever have the content on this site to be restricted, thus, the licence requirement of GNU Free Documentation License.
We do intend on selling tasteful advertising if this site gets popular to help pay for the additional servers and required bandwidth to keep the site fast. We welcome ideas on how we can reward contributors with the advertising revenue this site may eventually generate.
Rest assured, we love Volkswagens, and this site is something we love.
Do Paul and Mike own GermanRetro?
No, not really. We think the world owns GermanRetro. All we own is the domain name and a few servers that run the site. Open source software was built by the world, and we use it, and it is licensed to the world under GPL. Since article content is licenced under GNU Free Documentation License it too is owned by the world. If you contribute, do not contribute copyrighted material on the site.
Think of Paul and Mike as the current stewards of GermanRetro. Something we feel very privileged to be able to do! It is our hope it serves all VW lovers well.
Why do I need to license my photos under a free documentation license?
It is important that the owner of the photos (you) license all content, including photoÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs, freely to the public, otherwise they are not free and cannot be used. This protects the author (you), and releases content to the public to freely use, similar to how free software is licensed freely. More info can be found at [1].
